Chapter 7
Devon curved his arm around Elizabeth, enjoying the way her lithe body was pressed securely against his as they swayed to the soft beat of the music floating through the room. He'd been concentrating so hard on not stepping on Elizabeth's toes, he'd barely been able to talk. Now he relaxed and inhaled the fresh, sweet scent of her shampoo and a perfume that smelled of gardenias. Hmmm, she usually smelled like roses. Maybe she'd worn a new fragrance for the special night. Whatever the explanation, he loved the new scent. It was sweet and enticing at the same time.
Other couples danced around them, laughter and voices filling the crowded dance floor. A.J. and Aaron Dallas were comically waltzing together as their dates looked on and laughed. Enid and Blubber danced by, and Blubber stepped on Enid's tiny foot. Devon winced, but Enid just bit her lip and forced a smile. Devon was pleased to see she seemed to be relaxing a bit.
"It looks like Enid is warming up to Blubber," Devon commented.
"Good for her," Elizabeth said without much interest. Devon frowned. It was really odd that Elizabeth was being so cold. Something just didn't feel right. He glanced over his shoulder at Jessica for the zillionth time, checking her out. What was she doing with Wilkins? And why did Todd's date arrive all dressed up, then freak and leave?
Elizabeth lifted her head off his shoulder and glanced up at him, and he pulled back slightly to look into her bright blue-green eyes. She looked like a goddess in that slinky white dress, and for a minute he forgot what he was going to say. Then he glimpsed Jessica's shimmering lavender gown again and remembered. "Liz, what's Jessica doing with Todd?"
Elizabeth nibbled on her bottom lip a minute, and Devon tensed, wondering if he shouldn't have asked. He didn't want to remind her of Todd if it upset her, especially since tonight was the beginning of what he hoped was a long romance between him and Elizabeth.
Then Elizabeth trailed a finger down the outside of his arm and moved closer to him. "I guess I never mentioned it, Devon," she said softly, "but Jessica and Todd have a history together."
Devon's step faltered, and he almost tripped over his own feet. He caught himself at the last moment and simply stared at her in shock. "Are you kidding? I thought you and Todd had been together for a long time."
Elizabeth shrugged, loosening her arms around his neck and focusing on some obscure spot on his shirt. "We were, but I always suspected Jessica and Todd had a thing for each other."
Devon was baffled. "I can't believe how conniving Jessica is," he said, glancing over Elizabeth's bare shoulder at her sneaky twin and wondering how Elizabeth could be so tolerant. "How could she do that to youâher own sister?" He grimaced, feeling protective over Elizabeth. "Doesn't Jessica care about anyone but herself?"
Suddenly Elizabeth froze in his arms, her beautiful lips tightening into a frown.
